A UAV or unmanned aerial vehicle is more commonly called a drone and is even referred to as a remotely piloted aircraft and an unpiloted aerial vehicle. UAV drones are basically aircrafts without a human pilot abroad. The UAV drones have been classified into two categories by the ICAO or the International Civil Aviation Organization. The two categories of UAV drones are:
• Autonomous Aircrafts: These are aircrafts not considered suitable for proper regulation because of liability and legal issues.
• Remotely Piloted Aircrafts: These aircrafts have to work by civil regulations under ICAO and even under the appropriate National Aviation Authority.
The Work Procedure of the UAV Drones
There are different names given to the UAVs like UAS or Unpiloted Air System, model aircrafts and RPAS or Remotely Piloted Aircrafts Systems. These aircrafts are also popularly known as UAV drones. The flight of these aircrafts is either controlled by a remote control used by a pilot on ground or in some other vehicle or autonomously by the use of onboard computers. Typical recovery and launch method of a UAV is directly related to the functioning of a completely automatic system and even a operator on the ground using the UAV externally. Previously, the UAVs were used in the form of remotely controlled aircrafts but recently the autonomous control of the UAVs is being employed on a very wide scale.
The Main Work done by the UAV Drones
The UAV drones are largely deployed for special operation and military applications, they are also used in civil applications like firefighting and policing and even non-military security work like the inspection of pipelines or power. These aircrafts are preferred for dull, dangerous and dirty missions that cannot be carried out by manned aircrafts.
Classification of UAV Drones
The UAV drones can be classified into six main categories. Nevertheless, the seventh category i.e. multi-role airframe platforms are also growing in their popularity. The six popular categories of these aircrafts include:
• Target and distraction: Provides aerial and ground gunnery and does the job of simulating an enemy missile or aircraft.
• Reconnaissance: Gives battleground acumen.
• Combat: Gives attack potential meant for high-risk operations.
• Logistics: These are UAVs which are exclusively designed for logistics and cargo operations.
• Research and development: These UAVs are used for the further development of UAV technologies which can successfully be incorporated into UAV aircrafts which are field deployed.
• Commercial and Civil UAVs: These UAVs are specifically designed for commercial and civil applications.
The Uses of UAV Drones
The use of UAV drones is not just limited to military applications. There are some UAVs that have also been developed for civil aviations including the aerial surveillance of crops, rescue and search operations, acrobatic aerial footage required in filmmaking, counting wildlife, inspecting pipelines and power lines and delivering medical supplies in remote areas or inaccessible regions. Other uses of the UAV drones include border patrol missions, reconnaissance operations, surveillance, fire detection in forest areas, illegal hunting detection, large accident and fire investigation, land surveying, detection of illegal land fill, crowd monitoring and landslide measurement.
