Yuneec Q500 Typhoon Quadcopter Review
Would you like to own a really Yuneec quadcopter? Sorry, I could not resist the pun, company names really come in all forms and shape! Yuneec (pronounced like unique) is the manufacturer of the quadcopter we are going to review today, the Q500 Typhoon. This drone, was first presented at CES 2015, and it really made an impression there and goes in direct competition with the Phantom, that we have previously reviewed. But how good is it in reality?
A controller with an android inside
The Typhoon Q500 is a 500 mm quadcopter, packed with features including a 1080p 60FPS HD camera, a 3-axis gimbal and a feature right controller. The drone is sleek, well-built and wonderfully stable, but the controller is what sets this drone apart from the competition. It is a traditional controller, so it does not connect to your phone. It does not need to though, it includes a full android touchscreen tablet. There is no need to mess about with other devices everything is included in the package. And what a package! The software on the controller will give you all the telemetry information you need during the flight, including altitude, speed and obviously FPV, so you know where the quad is every moment and you’ll be able to position it accurately wherever you want. In case lose it; you can always call the drone back with the “home” function. Another neat feature is the ability to tilt the gimble from the controller, so that the camera can point at a different horizontal angle. Cool! Furthermore, Yuneec provides a protector for the gimble, when it’s not in use; this seems to be a very useful feature as the gimble tends to be a very delicate component.
Super steady flight
This drone was designed for everyone beginners and pros, no wonder it is super easy to fly. In addition to being easy to fly, the Typhoon Q500 is equipped with a 3 axis gimble that allows perfectly steady footage. Like its main competitor, the Phantom, this drone uses GPS to lock onto its location and hold it until you direct it to go elsewhere. A nice extra feature is the ability of the drone to follow you, without you having to worry about it. This could be useful to get videos of yourself, from above, while you are busy with some activity like cycling for example. When turned on, the Typhoon Q500 displays some colourful lights that will give you feedback on the current status.
The 5400mAh battery (and at the moment of writing they’ll give you two of them), will last for approximately 25 minutes, which is better than many others.

Customer Reviews and Scores
With the Typhoon Q500, Yuneec puts higher-end features into a quadcopter that is reasonably priced, in line with the Phantom. People who have bought it seem to very happy with it. At the moment of writing, there are 29 reviews on Amazon; the drone scores 4.7 stars out of 5 so the reviews are overwhelmingly positive!
“For the quad itself, it is significantly larger than the Phantom…which makes it much easier to see from a distance. I also love the position lights under the motors…this helps tremendously with maintaining orientation. The video quality and stability of the camera is excellent… especially for this price point!”
“Had this for a couple weeks now, and it just fly’s like a dream. Besides swapping batteries there’s no maintenance at all. It almost flies by itself, it’s so stable.”
“I love this Yuneec Q500 quadcopter. The long flight time, superb quality, great camera, unified remote and all the extras, including another battery, all combined to make this a great purchase.”
“So happy we decided to go with this model instead of anything else. I’ve had such a good time playing with this drone. I would recommend this quad copter to anyone!”
In summary the Yuneec Typhoon Q500 is the one we recommend for most people. It has all the features to satisfy beginner and most advanced users. It is easy to fly and the video quality is stunning. It does not use your phone for FPV and controls, so if you like to do everything with your phone, this might not be the drone for you. For everyone else, it is a safe bet.
